Web Development Services | Development Process | Who am I?

Bio - Allison Banister Corbett

I am an independent Web developer based out of Boston, MA. I built my first Web site in college, but I really discovered Web design while working for Cambridge Computer Services. There I founded a Web training business, offering training classes in several Web development tools. I also wrote several custom training classes, including classes in search engine optimization and Adobe Acrobat.

At the peak of the business I supervised a team of four Web consultants. Although training remained our core business, we also provided a variety of services including site design, Web development, database-driven site development; scripting; and search engine optimization. We worked with many of the best-known companies in New England, including a number of Fortune 500 corporations and customers in all industries and vertical markets. While I continued to teach and develop during this period, I also handled most of the project management and the customer and vendor interaction for the team.

When Cambridge Computer decided to refocus on its core mission of storage consulting, I moved into the storage division and spent several years as a storage consultant, where I provided training classes and consulting services in backup software and storage area networks (SANs). However, I continued to administer Cambridge Computer's Web server and remained one of two principal developers on the company Web site.

In November 2003 I left my full-time position with Cambridge Computer to become an independent consultant. I remain on very good terms with Cambridge Computer, and I am still the primary developer and consultant for their Web site. I also continue to provide subcontract storage consulting services for them.

Development Philosophy

My background in teaching and consulting now informs many aspects of my approach to Web development. I believe that you should have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the process and should have access to the information you need to make informed decisions. Since my customers frequently come from fields other than Web design, it is my role to explain the pros and cons of the various options to you and make intelligent recommendations.

I believe that too many Web sites focus on form rather than function. I interview all my customers extensively at the outset of every project to determine the goals and requirements of the site, and then re-evaluate these goals periodically as the site evolves. My design process places a strong emphasis on usability and information architecture.

While I have the technical background to provide most of the "bells and whistles" you see on the average site, I believe that just because you can include a feature on a Web site doesn't necessarily mean that you should. In discussions with the client I first identify the core goals of the site and then focus on the features that will add the most value to the site in the most efficient way possible.

I do Web design because I love it. To me, the Web represents an entirely new paradigm for information-sharing and community, with its own structure and rules and ethos. I love the intersection of the "techie" and the creative that the Web provides. I love the pace of change on the Web and the fact that there is always something new to learn. I try to bring my passion for the Web to my clients.

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am happy to provide references and a client list upon request.
