Development Process

I use an interactive process that involves the client in all stages of the development cycle. Although every project is different, a typical project works like this:

  1. Initial meeting: We hold an initial meeting to discuss the parameters of the project. I will ask you a number of questions about the goals of the site, the site audience, and the technical requirements. I will often ask you to do some "homework" before this meeting--for instance, to bring a list of other sites in your industry, or a list of sites you do and do not like. This research helps me learn about your industry and will help me develop a site design you'll be happy with. Based on our meeting, I will write a detailed proposal outlining the specifications of the project, cost, and what my services will and will not include.
  2. Site architecture: Based on our initial meeting (and possibly additional meetings) I will develop a scheme for the file and navigational structure of your site. This generally results in one or more diagrams of your site structure.
  3. Site design: I will produce one or more graphical mockups of potential site designs for your approval. You will either select one or send me back to the drawing board until we're both happy with the site design. This stage generally comes after the architectural phase, as the site architecture will determine many aspects of a site's "look and feel." After we have settled on a design, I will take the mockup and turn it into a full-fledged site that is ready to accept content.
  4. Content development: I, you or both work on developing text content for the site. This phase can happen concurrently with many of the other phases of the development process.
  5. Scripting and advanced development: If the site requires "advanced" features such as database development, scripts, etc we will build them. This phase may require additional meetings to determine database schemas, workflow, etc.
  6. Review and launch: You will have the opportunity to review the site before initial launch. After I have made any necessary corrections, we launch the site!
  7. Marketing, additional content, etc: Depending on the site there may be additional stages after launch as we develop additional content, optimize search engine listings, or add additional features to the site.

Several of these phases may happen concurrently, depending on the size of the team and the requirements of the project. If you have internal staff who can provide some aspects of the site development I am happy to work with them; I can provide advice and recommendations through all phases of this process.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
