Notes on the Works

Asleep at the Wheel: I wrote this after a very scary experience driving to Connecticut late at night to teach a training class. I arrived with the realization that I was very lucky to be alive.

On Browning's Words on Autumn: This is one of my first serious attempts at wrestling with iambic pentameter, and for a while there I thought iambic pentameter would win. I wrote this poem for my boyfriend John, who was trying to understand why I love Fall so much. He sent me the snippet of Browning's poem and said, "Is this why?" This is my response.

In the Detroit Meto Airport: Another travelling poem. This was, in fact, written in the Detroit Metro Airport, during a layover on my way back from a training class.

At the Next Table: I wrote this in a Friendly's Restaurant in Torrington, CT, while traveling for a training class (it may have been the day after I survived the car ride in Asleep at the Wheel, in fact). I spent most of the meal listening to the three people in the poem.

Notes on a Sales Lead: This is a "found" poem in a strange way. The first stanza or two is word-for-word duplication of my notes on someone to whom I was trying to sell a training class. The poem becomes gradually less "found" as it progresses. This is a dramatization, of course.
